Letter to Parents

Dear Parents,

Our first unit of the semester will be our drama unit, in which the students will be reading A Raisin in the Sun by Lorraine Hansberry. This play will challenge the students to think not only about racial equality but about the value and purpose of dreams.

A Raisin in the Sun is about dreams and what it takes to obtain those dreams despite the oppression placed upon the characters lives. The play takes place over the course of three weeks, and highlights the struggles of the characters as they attempt to achieve their dreams.

Our goal for this unit it to get the students thinking about their dreams and to help them to develop their own voice. We hope to accomplish this by assigning journal entries and discussions, in which the student will be encouraged to express their thoughts and feelings.

Thank you for your cooperation!

Ms. Lashbrook, Mr. Minor, and Ms. Slone
